Fastening wooden panels with magnets: hacks for clever craftsmen

When it comes to the interior design of a house or apartment, nothing beats wood. The material looks warm and cozy but is also robust and durable.
However, working with wood is not easy for everyone - especially hobby craftsmen with two left hands quickly reach their limits. Sometimes surfaces splinter, then nails must be laboriously hammered in and then removed again, etc.
It's easier if you simply attach wooden panels with magnets. For example, you can create storage space on walls or assemble small shelves in no time at all.

What types of wooden magnets are there?

How you attach the respective wooden panel depends on your personal ideas. Basically, you should consider what type of magnet is ideal for your purposes.
It is important that this can easily hold the weight of the wooden panel. Magnets that are good for crafting are for example:

  • Screw-on magnets
You can simply screw these special magnets into the wall and attach them to the respective wooden panel so that the opposite poles hold and the panel remains firmly in place.

  • Self-adhesive magnets
Self-adhesive models are particularly practical because they do not have to be attached to surfaces but can be removed at any time. However, this makes the construction a bit more unstable compared to those with screw-on magnets.

  • Magnetic Strips
Magnetic strips work in a similar way to ordinary self-adhesive magnets but have the advantage that they have an elongated surface. This is particularly useful for larger wooden panels.

  • Magnetic foil
Magnetic foil also has a wide surface, which can also be cut to size and adapted to the wood surface if necessary.

Magnets for wall mounting - Our ideas

A wide variety of wall attachments can be constructed with magnets.
It is particularly easy to attach a wooden panel flat to the wall with magnets - this can then be used, for example, as a photo wall or as a visually appealing jacket holder. You can also have quotes or sayings embossed into the wood.
We recommend magnetic strips for attachment.

  • To do this, cut a piece of wood according to your ideas. It should be sanded down on the front and back so that no disturbing wood fibers stick out.

  • Then use a pencil or felt-tip pen to mark the position of the magnetic strips on the wood. It makes sense not to fasten the strips too tightly at the edge - the wood can tear there.

  • Then mill indentations into the wood according to the pattern, into which you fit the magnetic strips. For this you need a router that allows you to adjust the milling depth. It is important that the recesses are as deep as possible - about 18 mm for a 20 mm thick piece of wood.
This is crucial so that the wooden magnets can also apply the necessary adhesive force.

  • Now insert the magnetic strips and screw them tight. At the same time, use magnets of the same size and attach them to a suitable piece of wall. Test that the bracket is tight enough to hold the keyboard. It is also worth looking at the product information at this point to be able to assess the power of the magnets. Done - that's how easy it is to attach a wooden panel with magnets.

Also interesting: Removable frames with magnets for wood as wall decoration

Since you have created a suitable base with your wooden panel, the only thing missing is a suitable decoration.
How about a picture or photo? We provide the right idea for the frame.

Annoying thing about photo frames is that the glazed top is usually difficult to change. If you use a wooden magnetic picture frame, you can save yourself this trouble.

  • Simply insert four small magnets of your choice into the appropriate corners of the top of the frame. You can work with potholes, for example. Drill four round holes on the detachable top and fixed bottom of the frame. Then insert eight pot magnets with the appropriate diameter into this.
You can attach them with magnetic adhesive.

  • Now join the top and bottom together - done.
The magnets hold the wood in place but are easily separated from each other so you can easily insert photos, postcards, or the like.

If you want to attach wooden panels or other objects with magnets, you can let your creativity run free.
It is crucial that you always keep in mind the weight that the respective magnet models must lift.
If the attachment is still correct, nothing can go wrong.
