Never have to search for keys again - with the magnetic key holder
Do you know the following situation? You're pressed for time and must get to work urgently, but you can't find your keys.
You frantically rummage through your belongings and rattle all the floors of your house, but you can't find your keys.
You save yourself this stress with a practical, magnetic key holder. You can, for example, attach one of these to the wall next to the front door where it is clearly visible and store all your keys there. In this way, you always have them in view and avoid excessive searches.
Learn how to make your own key holder below.
The DIY instructions for your key holder: Magnetic & practical
By using magnets, you can make key storage a lot easier.
When building the corresponding magnetic key holder, it is best to proceed step by step:
Step 1: Material procurement and preparation
For your magnetic key holder you will need the following:
- jigsaw
- sandpaper
- screwdriver
- stand drill with Forstner bit
- suitable discmagnets or rodmagnets (4 x 4 mm)
- pencil & paper
- wooden board (approx. 60 x 15 x 4.4 cm)
- adhesive for magnets
- filler, if needed
The first step is to make a sketch. Here you can specify the desired shape for your magnetic key holder. Do you prefer a simple rectangle or something more sophisticated - like an animal-shaped holder? There are no limits to your imagination and creativity.
Outline the shape at actual size on a piece of paper. Where you want to attach the keys, add a series of holes the diameter of your discmagnets.
Then cut out the resulting template and attach it to the wooden board.
Step 2: Cutting and drilling wood
Now saw your board according to the shape of the template. Sand the sharp edges with sandpaper.
For the holes in which you insert the key holder magnets, you need a drill press with a Forstner bit of the appropriate size. The round holes should be 4 millimeters deep and drilled into the wood at regular intervals.
Now the glue is used. You use this for the indentations and then push your discmagnets in. The glue keeps them firmly in place. It is important that your magnets are 100% flush on the front of the magnetic key holder! This is the only way to guarantee a good grip.
Step 3: Follow-up treatment
Once the board has been cut to size and the glue has dried, you need to check everything again. It should not have any holes or bumps. Hold it up to the light so that the surface reflects to discover even small imperfections.
Seal holes with simple filler and then sand them down. To make it look nicer, you can paint or oil the front of your magnetic wooden key holder afterwards.
Step 4: The wall mount
Finally, the magnetic key holder must be securely attached to the wall. You have various options. Of course, you can simply screw an ordinary wall bracket to the key holder and then fix it to the wall with dowels and suitable screws.
If you want something a little more sophisticated, you can use our practical magnetic holders. For example, if you're attaching additional magnets to the underside of your board, our screw-on adhesive bases are ideal as a holder.
The advantage of this is that you can use them to detach and reattach your holder whenever you feel like it.
Once you have successfully attached your magnetic key holder, you should finally test whether the keys and fitted magnets are secure.
If everything stays in place, you're done!
TIP
Of course, you don't have to follow our instructions for the magnetic key holder slavishly. Finally, the big advantage is that you can customize your holder freely and adapt it to the furnishings of your home. With different types of wood, colors and surface treatments you can create a unique and aesthetically pleasing key holder.
Are keys magnetic?
Since you are using a magnetic key holder, you should make sure that the respective keys can also be magnetized.
In most cases, modern key models are not magnetic - however, you can easily add magnetic parts using key fobs or magnetic clips and then attach them to the board.
