Magnetic wall – our guide for you!

header_magnetwand_unser-ratgeber-fuer-sie
Papers, business cards, appointments, notes - mountains of paper are often piled up on desks and kitchen counters in this country, the contents of which are quickly forgotten in the chaos of notes. While in earlier days a cork board was used to create order in the vertical, many users today prefer magnetic walls. Not only do they make it possible to attach objects without damaging them, but they also serve as whiteboards in the office or as an organization system in the workshop.
Find out below what possibilities the different types of magnetic wall offer and how they best bring their advantages to bear.

Design your own magnetic wall – the possibilities

You can easily construct magnetic walls, for example, by using tools such as:

  • magnetic foil
  • magnetic wall paint
  • plates

Which method makes the most sense for your magnetic wall and delivers the required quality is primarily determined by the demands of future wall users.

Magnetic wall with ferrous foil – makes the wall fit for magnets

Flexible iron foils create a base for magnets on room or partition walls as well as doors. The big advantages are that neither screws nor nails are needed for attachment and that the dimensions of the surface can be individually adapted to the spatial conditions.

Large magnetic wall with iron foil: Possible applications

Since many iron foils themselves have a surface coating, they serve not only as a memo board for keeping notes, but also as a whiteboard. This property makes magnetic walls made of iron foil particularly interesting for schools and offices, but there are also other areas of application:

  1. At school: Visually supported learning

Iron foil transforms free spaces on the classroom wall into flexible memory aids: Mathematical formulas and vocabulary cards that are meant to be memorized over a longer period are placed there more clearly than on the blackboard, which is used every day. The magnetic surface can also make history, geography, or economics lessons exciting. Maps of the world or maps can be attached to the coated iron foil with adhesive tape, so that you can mark the movements of historical armies or trade routes with colored magnets.
A magnetic pin board is also ideal for displaying the results of art class - better than a cork board, as drawings and pictures will not be damaged by punctures.

  2. In the conference room: Combination of whiteboard and pinboard

Both managers and external coaches prefer to convey essential basics visually. This approach is based on the knowledge that people internalize content better when they perceive it through several sensory organs (e.g., eyes and ears) at the same time.
A magnetic wall made of coated iron foil in the conference room makes it possible to create to-do lists or weekly goals using whiteboard markers and to present drafts, e.g., the modernized company logo or the current print advertising campaign.
So, you always have an overview of all the information in the office. Memo boards made of iron foil also make it easier to work on content: Architectural offices use them to fix their large-format drafts, while freight forwarders plan their routes on a map that has been stuck on.

  3. The magnetic wall for the children's room - Adhesive grounds in a flexible form

Children's rooms are often designed according to themed concepts, which also include a colored wall design. In this environment, unusual areas such as narrow bars on the closet door or the room door are usually suitable for grounds for detention. Since you can cut coated iron foil into any shape with scissors or a cutter knife - whether hearts, stars, or flowers - they can be individually integrated into every child’s world. They are easy to attach using a self-adhesive iron foil.

  4. The magnetic wall in the kitchen - Magnetic walls replace the refrigerator door

The times when the refrigerator door served as a magnetic surface for notes are a thing of the past: Modern kitchens often hide the refrigerator behind wooden and plastic fronts or behind those made of brushed stainless steel, which are rarely misused as a pin board. With coated iron foil, you can create adhesive surfaces on any area of the kitchen wall on which appointment reminders, the garbage disposal plan, the menu of the delivery service or a child's drawing can find their place. You can find suitable materials for this in our magnetic foil category.

  5. In the workshop - for notes and papers

An adhesive wall made of iron foil with a whiteboard coating can hold documents such as order confirmations or construction sketches in the workshop. People who want to organize small metal parts or must keep keys and tools within reach are better served with static magnetic walls - including suitable brackets or equipped with neodymium magnetic foil.

Practical tip for attachment: Self-adhesive iron foil sticks effortlessly to smooth surfaces. If you want to attach the foil to cork, polystyrene or other coarse-pored surfaces, this works best with a flexible adhesive. Iron foil is available by the meter on rolls, so you only must calculate in advance whether the roll width is sufficient for your project.

Magnetic foil is usually used as a base for advertising material. Since it can be printed with any desired motif, you can use it, for example, to design flexibly removable car advertising and magnetic business cards. To construct a large or small magnetic wall, you need magnetic sheets that have a self-adhesive surface on their non-stick side.

Magnetic wall with magnet: Possible applications

While in the classroom and seminar room the focus is primarily on use as a presentation surface, magnetic walls in the office, the kitchen and especially in the workshop are more often used as an adhesive surface for tools and office supplies. If a particularly high load capacity is required, you should use a neodymium magnetic foil. Naturally, you can cut out flexible shapes from the foil and, for example, attach narrow strips horizontally or vertically to the wall. Such magnetic boards help, especially in the workshop and hobby room, to make optimal use of the available space and to avoid chaos.

Magnetic wall with magnetic wall paint - magnetic by painting

Magnetic paint consists of wall paint mixed with tiny, non-rusting iron particles. The layer of paint created in this way serves as an adhesive base for magnets. In order to find sufficient support on the sometimes rough wall structure, it makes sense to use neodymium magnets.

Magnetic wall with magnetic paint: Possible applications

Magnetic paint creates a surprise effect and can cleverly conceal magnetic walls. This is particularly useful in the following environments:

In the children's room - health-friendly fun

Building materials and furniture in the children's room must meet the highest standards. In addition to pollutants, parents are also concerned about electromagnetic fields. Since magnetic paint is not magnetic itself, but only contains iron particles, it does not generate radiation or magnetic fields. Magnetic paints are therefore suitable for safe use in children's rooms.

The application is simple

Apply the paint to the selected wall surface with a brush or roller, just like regular wall paint. It is recommended to apply it in three layers for maximum effect. Due to its iron content, the color has a gray tone that can easily be integrated into the design concept of the room.
However, magnetic paint is particularly flexible because it can easily be painted over with any other wall paint.
Latex paint and acrylic paint are particularly suitable because of their smooth surfaces, which offer the magnets the best possible adhesive surface. Even sticking thin wallpaper over the magnetic paint can work – but you should first test whether the magnetic effect is retained on a test surface.

Integrate magnetic walls invisibly in the children's room

Children have concrete ideas about the desired ambience of their room - sometimes these requirements change quickly with the passing fads. For a magnetic wall with magnetic paint, the Princess Lillifee pink and the space motifs do not have to go but can simply be placed over them. Game magnets, sticky notes or the photo from your last vacation are then fixed to the wall of the room as if by magic.

Sublime elegance in living spaces

The invisible adhesive base made of magnetic paint is not only fun for children. If you plan the wall design in the kitchen, living room and study in detail and follow a certain living concept, you do not want to spoil the effect with disturbing elements. This is where magnetic paint comes in handy to create surfaces where you can attach important phone numbers or messages to family members if needed. If simple elegance is desired as part of a celebration, notes and magnets can be removed without a trace.

Where is magnetic paint not the ideal solution?

Magnetic paint is primarily used to invisibly integrate adhesive bases into living areas. In the conference room and in the workshop, on the other hand, it makes less sense. Here it is primarily important to be able to illustrate facts flexibly or to create additional storage space on the wall. However, magnetic paint can demonstrate its advantages in the reception area of companies or on shop counters. Urgent appointments and important documents can be fixed there for a short time, but they can also disappear again quickly.

Static magnetic boards come in various forms made of stainless steel, colored coated or with a metal layer behind glass. The main differences here are whether the board itself can be written on and whether it offers the possibility of attaching hooks or containers. You can discover a selection of different magnetic boards in our magnetic board category.

Magnetic boards: Possible applications

You can discover a selection of different magnetic boards in our shop. There are various possible uses.

  1. Pupils and students need flexibly writable surfaces

Static magnetic boards are particularly useful in school and university when they can be written on with chalk or permanent marker. Black and white coated magnetic board - memo boards are ideal for this - a magnetic board made of glass, on the other hand, could break in the hustle and bustle of the primary school. When mounted on the wall, the board should be large enough to hold year planners or geographic maps, if necessary, attached with magnets or adhesive tape. Also, interesting for seminar rooms are mobile magnetic boards that can be easily moved into the desired position for presentations. White-coated boards that can be written on not only offer the opportunity to take notes with permanent markers, but also serve as a projection surface for the beamer.
You should not resort to black-coated magnetic boards in this context.

  2. Different demands in the conference room, at reception and in the tea kitchen

Mobile magnetic boards take over the function of adhesive base, whiteboard, and projection screen at staff meetings.
In other premises of a company, wall-mounted models can also serve decorative purposes. Magnetic walls made of brushed stainless steel, which reflect the shape of the company logo, for example, are aesthetically appealing, especially at the reception or in the executive office. In the break room, boards with an individual motif print are ideal - you can, for example, attach a photo to the board magnetic board.

  3. Workshop and household need multifunctional brackets

Stainless steel boards are ideal as magnetic boards in the workshop, which, in addition to their magnetic properties, also have holes for hooks and recesses for hanging containers. So not only notes and papers have their place, but also keys, screws, tools, and small parts. Attaching magnetic hooks further expands the storage space. Since the magnets must carry a lot of weight, you should give preference to neodymium magnets - the so-called super magnets - over the well-known ferrite magnets.
With these, utensils that are used a lot in the kitchen, such as coffee measuring spoons or egg timers, can be securely fixed to the blackboard or magnetic board.

Which magnets are suitable for use on a magnet wall?

In contrast to electromagnets, conventional refrigerator and wall magnets are so-called permanent magnets. With these, the material composition determines the adhesive force. In earlier times, magnets were usually based on ferrite - until 1982, when a magnetic material based on the rare earth neodymium, iron and boron was developed. With a magnetic energy density of around 500 kJ/m3, neodymium magnets have a much higher attractive force than average ferrite magnets with 30 kJ/m3. If both have the same mass, a neodymium magnet will stick to ferromagnetic materials about 10 times more strongly than a ferrite magnet.

Are super magnets necessary for the magnetic wall?

Of course, you don't need super magnets to mount notes, photos, and business cards on the wall, but neodymium magnets are still useful for magnetic walls. Very small cubemagnets, which are also able to hold booklets and multi-page brochures, are sufficient for attaching papers. Neodymium magnets have proven particularly useful on adhesive walls in the kitchen and workshop. Here users must realize that the magnets can carry many times their own weight. A neodymium magnet measuring 20 x 10 millimeters holds around 10 kilograms vertically. Hooks equipped with neodymium magnets are therefore ideal for attaching cutlery or tools with a corresponding weight to the wall.

Conclusion: A magnetic wall offers great design options

Magnetic walls not only offer you aesthetic design options, but also a variety of additional functions: as a white and memo board, as a projector projection surface and as a vertical shelf. The flexible fastening materials enable both invisible and mobile and particularly versatile walls. Which magnetic wall solution is the ideal for you depends solely on your individual needs.
