Santoprene ®
Depending on their nature, plastics can be divided into different types. The most important differentiation criteria include formability, hardness, and elasticity, breaking strength as well as temperature and heat resistance. Accordingly, a distinction is made between:
- Thermoplastics that can deform at a certain temperature
- Elastic plastics (also called elastomers) that deform due to the action of mechanical force, but then return to their original shape.
If both of the above properties occur together, one speaks in technical terms of "thermoplastic vulcanizates" (TPV for short). The plastic with the trade name Santoprene ™ also falls into this category. The material from the PP-EDM product group is manufactured by the American company ExxonMobil and distributed through Bigler AG.
Practical application of Santoprene™
As a thermoplastic and at the same time elastic plastic, Santoprene ™ consists of ethylene-propylene-diene rubber particles. Thanks to its high flexibility and durability, it is particularly suitable for extremely hot or cold environments. We use Santoprene ™ to provide our magnet systems with a rubber jacket. Rubberized magnets offer two advantages:
- The metallic surface remains permanently protected from scratches.
- The displacement force increases considerably.
Santoprene ™ is used in industry for components such as tool handles or floor casters for tool trolleys. The seals of ovens and cold rooms are often made of thermoplastic vulcanizate. There are also numerous possible uses in the domestic area. This is how Santoprene ™ provides the basis for:
- Handles for sporting goods (tennis rackets, baseball bats etc.)
- Footboards of computer monitors
- Vibration isolators
